You make some good points. Often owning an individual company leads to someone wanting to understand the financial markets more. It's so much easier to understand how one company is performing than how an entire index.
I often told people who bought one company for research and learning that buy a stock was like buying a store (Starbucks, Home Depot, etc.) and buying an index was buying a whole mall.
